The Scale That Runs Backward
To anyone stepping int beadwork for the first time, walking up to a wall of seed beads can feel overwhelming. You encounter little bags or tubes of beads labeled with fractional numbers like 15/0, 11/0, 8/0 &6/0. At first glance, intuition suggests and 8/0should be smaller than an 11/0.
In seed bead sizing, however, the larger the number, the smaller the bead.
This convention comes from the historic Venetian aught (/0) system. Centuries ago, glassmakers in Murano sized seed beads by measuring how many individual beads, lined up end-to-end along their central string holes, fit inside a singular linear inch.
- Eleven size 11/0 beads fit along one inch.
- 15 micro size 15 beads fit along that same inch.
Understanding this scale - and the geometry of the glass itself - is the first step toward building structural , long lasting beadwork.

The Aught Sizing Spectrum at a Glance
- Size 6/0 (~4.0mm): Historically know as "E-beads." These feature generous central holes that swallow heavy cord, 1mm leather and thick micro-macrame thread. They are ideal for quick tactile practice, children's projects, and chunky wraps.
-
Size 8/0 (~3.0mm): The bridge size. They possess enough mass to give structural ropes (like Russian spiral and Kumihimo) weight, while remaining small enough for elegant multi-strand layering.
-
Size 11/0 (~2.0mm): The undisputed global standard. Size 11/0 beads represent the vast majority of off-loom patterns, flat peyote tapestries, and geometric jewelry worldwide. They strike a balance between structural resolution and stitching speed.
- Size 15/0 (~1.0mm): The micro realm. Working with 15/0s demands patience, sharp vision, and fine needles. They allow for photo-realistic gradient blending, delicate tapering on cuffs, and the fine cinch rows needed to trap cabochons without bezels.

Round Rocailles vs. Japanese Cylinders (Delica)
The most common trap for beginner weavers is treating all size 11/0 beads as interchangeable. A pattern designed for Japanese cylinder beads will warp, buckle, or distort if stitched with round rocailles.

Czech & Japanese Round Rocaille |
Japanese Cylinder (Miyuki Delica / Toho Aiko |
| Physical Profile | Donut-shaped; softly rounded exterior walls | Precision cylinder; sharp, square cut edges |
| Wall & Hole Geometry | Thick glass wall; standard round hole | Micro-thin glass wall; expansive open channel |
| Best Architectural Role | Fringe cascades, curved ropes, picot edging | Flat peyote bands, square stitch, loom tapestries |
| Kinetic Behaviour | Beads pivot along curved shoulders for supple drape | Beads interlock flush like floor tiles with zero gaps |
If your are weaving a wide, graphic bracelet with sharp geometric lines, choose Miyuki Delicas. The flat sides lock together seamlessly, creating a clean fabric of glass.
If you are crafting a lone, cascading waterfall fringe earrings or a rope necklace, use round rocailles. Their curved profiles let thread glide across external rims without catching, allowing the jewelry to drape with cavity.

Decoding Surface Finishes: Which Colours Last?
A stunning necklace is heartbreaking if its metallic sheen rubs away after three days of wear. Surface finishes behave differently under friction, UV exposure, and body oils:
- In-Glass Pigment (Permanent): Opaque black, chalk white, and transparent cobalt are coloured by mineral oxides melted directly into the molten batch glass. These can never chip, peel, or rub away.
- Silver-Lined Glass (High Reflectivity): Clear or tinted glass jackets encase an interior lining of mirrored metallic foil. These beads catch light dramatically from within. Store them in dry, dark conditions with anti-tarnish tabs to protect the interior silver from atmospheric oxidation.
- Standard Galvanized (High Risk): An electroplated metallic sheen deposited on the exterior surface of the bead. Without a protective topcoat, skin acidity and friction can wear standard galvanized coatings down to clear glass within weeks.
-
Beaded Polymer Coatings (Heirloom Grade): Look for manufacturer designations like Duracoat or PermaFinish. These beads receive a heat-bonded clear polymer shell over the metallic finish, making them resistant to perfumes, skin moisture, and daily friction.
